We're working with Halifax Solid Waste Management Services to build an educational robot out of recycled materials.

Project started 2018-05-29. Discussion is on our Google Group.

Goal

Build an educational robot that could be taken to Halifax schools to help educators teach children about recycling.

Requirments

  • Airline carry-on size 22 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm (max)
  • Constructed primarily from post-consumer recycled materials
  • Friendly
  • Able to play pre-recorded audio clips (typically containing speech)
  • Audio clips cued by remote control
  • Capable of limited motion (i.e. not just a talking statue)

Proposed Stretch Goals:

  • Animated face (possibly NeoPixel, DotStar, or Hub75 panel behind a diffuser of some kind)
  • Additional motion
  • Voice recognition

We are targeting the 2018-2019 school year, but the project may continue to evolve beyond that.

The brains

Raspberry pi is the way to go, we think. Power: A decent sized USB powerbank can deliver 5 watts for 4 hours. A Pi with accessories needs about 5 watts? Need to check this guess…
